My December Lament

Well, while many other people (including many teenagers) were off winning awards for their quality weblogs from The Guardian, my little brainsplurge-come-diary is still here, festering in its little corner of the interwebnet. Here, take a look at what real quality's like to read: //www.guardian.co.uk/online/weblogs/story/0,14024,1108883,00.html

One of the winners makes for a rather... Illuminating read; Belle Du Jour: The Diary Of A London Call-Girl. Not for the faint of heart, it gets rather explicit at times. Just a warning.

About Acorn

This takes me back a few years. About Acorn

... I've still not seen any commercial computers using the ARM processor at the heart of their architecture. Acorn still was lightyears ahead of its time. Just a shame they aren't trading any more. A real shame.

Now here's a thought-provoking quote...

"If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it.

He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. That ideas should freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire, expansible over all space, without lessening their density at any point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation.

Inventions then cannot, in nature, be a subject of property."

- Thomas Jefferson

Now that's the first intelligent thing I've heard for weeks (including myself).

Spitzing Image

... And while the world's attention is focused on the European Space Agency's gamble for a December 25th Mars landing, NASA keeps on chugging away with its developments. The latest announcement is the first pictures from Spitzer, their new infra-red deep space telescope (that can look THROUGH dust clouds to provide some pretty damn astounding pictures).

This stuff is the stuff I really like to look at, it's mind-expanding just looking at these pictures and imagining the pure enormity and incredible things that we just never see in our universe.

But I ramble. Here, have some Spitzer pictures.

Enjoy.

Postman sues over 'too many letters' (BBC NEWS | England | West Midlands)

When will the madness end? Is the UK going to become a carbon copy of the US in terms of people just sueing when they feel hard-done by? I hate to be cynical, but it's happening already.

I mean come on, so what if people post too many letters - he should just deal with it! He's a POST MAN, that's what he's supposed to do! Dear lord almighty.

Again, thanks to James for pointing out this gem to me ;)

Shock And Awe!

... I've got my own little grossout shock-and-awe thing going on here.

They should make Saddam read >> this << daily as punishment for his crimes against humanity. Or something.

if you can read past the first line, you're a stronger person than some of the people that I know ;)

Aaaaaaaaand, in the style so epitomised by a certain Wayne from his self-titled film World of, .............. "I want her. She will be mine."

What am I drooling about now? Oh, yer... Only the latest piece of shiny GEEK-MUST-HAVE-GADGET that is the KiSS DP-558.

BABEH!!!!!!

Oh maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, if I could get my grimy paws on one of those babies I'd be a happy, happy boy.

A man can dream, eh ;)

Benjamin Franklin always had to go one better

... Even when he had bladder stones, to remove them he stood on his head and then urinated.

And it worked, too.

Useless Fact For The Day for Monday the 8th of December 2003.

Yes, I know Christmas is just around the corner. No, I won't be talking about it any from now. I hate the way Christmas has become, might as well just rename it to Commercialmas. Bah to the lot of it.

I can't afford to pay to say humbug as well, so you'll just have to make do with bah.

Sunday, December 7
..."We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know."...

... A sample, a taster if you will, of the "Foot in Mouth" award-winning quote from a certain someone special. But more on that later. Firstly, to a British Sunday newspaper,

"I know who I am. No-one else knows who I am. If I was a giraffe and somebody said I was a snake, I'd think, 'no, actually I'm a giraffe'."

-- Richard Gere

... Makes sense to me. However, the year's most baffling quote has gone to, yes, a certain Mr. Rumsfeld. I think that I can understand even the most cryptic English even pretty well, but what he said recently takes the proverbial biscuit... Look for yourself on the Sky News page.

The Defence Secretary said: "Reports that say something hasn't happened are interesting to me, because as we know, there are known unknowns; there are things we know we know.

"We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know."

Campaign spokesman John Lister said: "We think we know what he means. But we don't know if we really know."

That even ranks higher than a quote by the new Californian Governer, a Mr. Schwarzenegger:

"I think that gay marriage is something that should be between a man and a woman"

... Which I think is a pretty good achievement in itself.

Aside from that, further proof that America = lawsuit culture: a man in New York was charged by a policeman when one of his little kid's balloons burst in the street. Apparently he was causing an "undue public disturbance"... I'd like to give an unduly publically disturbance to the stupid muppet retard policeman who issued the charge in the first place. This isn't the first time somebody's been charged for no apparent logical reason though... Check this out.

Now then, on a final note for now, just think: you probably have countless atlases and mapbooks of your country and your region, but what about the Internet hey? No? Not even one? Pfft, you internet newbie. Go get one sharpish!

MMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........

... Man, this baby might be small, but it's beautiful.

Look at it... Fantastic little piece of kit. It's called the Rio Karma, it has 20gb of storage onboard, and can play all the usual filetypes including MP3, and WMA, AND it can support my lovely favourite Ogg - AND FLAC files!!! Amazing. Plus the docking station is just impressive to the max... RCA outputs, ETHERNET (!!!!!!!) and... Well... Just look at it. It's a great little bit of kit. It's even got a Lithium-Ion battery, which lasts something ridiculously long like 16 hours... Great stuff. Here's some more information on it: //www.mp3players.co.uk/forum/TopicDisplay.php3?intThreadId=850

Shame about the headphones, but hey, I already have some nice Sony MDR-821s so that's no worry. Heh. :D

If I had the money, I'd even buy this player over the iRiver 20gb iHP-120, which is saying something.

The only othe shame is the price really, else I'd be snapping it up quick as a flash. ?280 from Amazon UK... Just too much. =( Here's hoping that it comes down in price soon after Christmas!

Mmmmmmmmm... gigapixel

Interesting, interesting... one clever guy's gone and made a gigapixel image by stitching together hundreds of high res digital photos using a combination of software he's written, some other software and an extreme amount of patience... I want to see this baby printed out :D

The guy's called Max Lyons, and the item in question is called Breaking the Gigapixel Barrier. Go read if you're interested in photography, most interesting.
